Hope for Healing

Support Group

About us...

In 2018 this support group was established to offer peer group support and healing for those who have struggled with meaning, life's purpose, grief, disability, hopelessness, or loneliness.

We are here to support each other practically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually through listening, encouragement, shared experiences, music-making, education, and connection to professional and other resources. The group also provides a free meal each week to those in need, as well as practical help for those with physical disabilities, or mental health challenges.

We are a non-profit peer support group, founded in 2018 to meet the needs of members of the community who have experienced similar struggles, and are determined to overcome them.

About Us

Our Sessions & What to Expect

  • A safe space for peer and facilitated support. Feel held and grounded by a supportive community.

  • Be seen, heard, and supported exactly as you are. Feel that you belong.

  • Feel hopeful and energised.

  • Opportunities to meet others who have experienced similar struggles to find lasting hope, personal meaning and purpose, and connection.

  • Feel empowered in a community of people who understand what it takes to live with and overcome the challenges of the past and present.

  • Support and encouragement, given by all to all.

  • Interactive discussion sessions with others to share ideas & strategies.

  • Education sessions. Learn new information about how to heal from/cope with hopelessness, a crisis of meaning/purpose, disability, grief, and loneliness.

  • Increase confidence and skills that help you to live a healed life with hope.

  • Connection to independent professional resources within the community (note: a support group does not take the place of counselling, and you may also need to participate in regular counselling sessions with a health professional if appropriate).

  • Enjoy yourself!

Connection

Arrive promptly at 6:30pm for a time to connect with other group members as part of the session.

Music

Music making is a powerful way to bring people together and facilitate healing. We often begin sessions with music making, group sharing, and a statement of our purpose.

Education

The facilitator or guest speaker for the week will often give a Thought For The Day, Reflection Talk, or Training Session covering various topics related to the group's purposes. This is followed by a time for discussion.

Overview

Group Guidelines & Confidentiality

Confidentiality is very important; so anything that’s being said during the meeting has to stay between the members. That way people will feel comfortable in sharing their true thoughts and feelings.

The group facilitator will attempt to ensure that everyone feels heard, will encourage non-judgemental discussion, reflection and mutual encouragement. At Hope for Healing, we love and respect each other by listening, encouraging, and supporting one another with zero tolerance for abuse.

This is a peer support group, and not designed to replace counselling, therapy or other medical professional services. If you need these services we have a network of trusted experts in the locality to whom we can refer you.

There is no obligation to share or contribute, especially if it is your first time, but do remember that an important part of our healing is helping to heal others.  Listening (and offering silent encouragement by smiling and paying attention) is also a way of taking part.
